Included was:
- a Motorsport Australia speed license worth $170, and
- a yearly NSWRRC club membership worth $115.
The New South Wales Road Racing Club (NSWRRC) motorsport development plan was established some time ago as a pathway into motorsport for women who had an interest in motor racing but had no previous experience and, perhaps, very little mechanical knowledge but were willing to learn.
The 2025 program continued from the program last year, and before that, the tradition of encouraging women in motorsport, but it has also been broadened to include juniors and, slots permitting, adult male students.
The program had a limited number of student positions available as the training has to fit in with the motorsport events on the training days and with the number of driving mentors available.
What did you need to participate in the development program? Your own car and a willingness to learn as well as accepting the challenge of driving your car out of your normal comfort zone. The students were supervised by an experienced driving mentor who has a significant amount of race car driving experience under their belt. They received practical car maintenance and race car preparation training as well as a theoretical lesson on optimum racing lines and race driving techniques early in the program. They also received Motorsport Australia L2S Speed Licence to participate which the NSWRRC was able to help them obtain.
The development program ran concurrently with the NSWRRC’s motorsport program from February till October with students participating in some of those events. The program was designed to be flexible as the training and mentoring is limited by track capacity and availability of driving mentors. The student did not have to attend all the track training days in order to receive the necessary skills to drive their car around a race track in a capable and proficient manner. However, if the student attended all training events they would receive both theoretical and practical track driving training under the supervision of driving mentors as outlined in the table below.
The 2025 MDP followed on from the successful 2024 program in a similar format. The program consisted of both online theory training and face to face training days as well as track and skidpan events over the entire year. Students were expected to complete the theory and face-to-face training in order to graduate from the program. This meant a time commitment of a minimum of one weekend a month.
The program was extensive and required the club to commit significant resources so the cost for the year was $1100. This included the online training component, entry to all events, 1 year membership with the NSW Road Racing Club, and provision of your Motorsport Australia Speed Licence.
Student numbers were limited.
